Simply Business Publishes New Report Highlighting Trends and Perspectives of U.S. Solopreneurs

BOSTON, Aug. 26, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Simply Business, LLC, the leading digital insurance marketplace for small businesses, today released The Power of One: 2025 Solopreneur Report, offering insights into America’s one-person business owners. The inaugural proprietary survey of over 1,000 Simply Business solopreneur customers illuminates the emotional, financial, and technological factors underpinning this vital and growing segment of the U.S. small business market.

According to the U.S. Census, there are nearly 30 million solopreneur businesses, underscoring their influence on the economy. The Power of One report explores what it takes to build and maintain a business of one in today’s environment.

Key Findings

Solopreneurs are purpose-driven, but under pressure

  • More than half (53%) started their business fueled by passion, yet 61% underestimated the challenge of managing every aspect alone.
  • Flexibility and autonomy remain key motivators, yet personal sacrifices are common – 42% have given up time with family and friends, and over one-third (34%) have considered giving up on their business due to financial stress or emotional burnout.
  • Despite these pressures, nearly half (49%) prioritize maintaining work-life balance as a key goal for the year ahead.

Solopreneurs face financial uncertainty, yet remain optimistic

  • Nearly half (48%) have experienced a month or more without income, and the majority (68%) have less than six months of savings or no safety net.
  • Still, 58% feel financially secure about their business, and optimism runs high – with 76% confident their business will grow in the next year and 79% optimistic about the future of their business.
  • In fact, 72% list growing revenue or sales as their top goal, underscoring a determined focus on business success despite ongoing financial challenges.

Solopreneurs are leveraging technology, but have room to grow

  • Over half (53%) use marketing and social media tools to grow their business, while 39% rely on accounting or finance apps.
  • Less than a quarter have adopted AI or automation tools to streamline operations.
  • One in five choose to navigate business challenges independently, without any external support.

“Solopreneurs face a different set of challenges than other business owners, and we understand the complexities of their environment,” said Samantha Roady, U.S. CEO of Simply Business. “This report showcases that despite the pressures and uncertainties that come with running a business on their own, these entrepreneurs have a resilient spirit and an optimistic outlook. We’re proud to support this purpose-driven group and help them find the insurance solutions that best fit their unique needs.”
