Leading the innovations in the new camera is the introduction of AF-C continuous autofocus, a first for Hasselblad. New deep learning algorithms translate to faster, more reliable subject detection and tracking for humans, vehicles, cats, and dogs. Additionally, a LiDAR sensor on the front of the camera supplements the native Phase Detection Autofocus system, expanded to 425 zones. A new AF illuminator for improves autofocus performance in low light.

The camera’s rendering abilities have also been improved with the Hasselblad Natural Color Solution with High Dynamic Range, boasting lifelike color, better highlight retention, and richer tonal detail. The new color science, combined with an enhanced 100MP BSI CMOS sensor, native ISO 50 sensitivity, 16-bit color, and more than 15 stops of dynamic range, promises to deliver exceptional results even low-light scenes.

Files generated with the new HNCS HDR can be saved in both HEIF or JPEG formats, and a new two-way tilting 3.6″ OLED rear touchscreen is 75% brighter for instant image review.

Medium format cameras are smaller and lighter than ever—the X2D II 100C is 7.5% lighter at 1.8 lb—encouraging people to take them out of the studio and into the world. Hasselblad has improved the X2D II 100C’s in-body image stabilization to up to eight times the performance of the first generation, with a 5-axis, 10-stop system that benefits handheld use.

With large sensors come large files, and for this Hasselblad has accommodated shooters with the inclusion of 1 TB of internal storage that holds more than 50,000 HEIF images—plenty of room for any shoot. The internal storage also unlocks higher read and write speeds, meaning the bulky, high-resolution files won’t interfere with the pace of creation. A CFexpress Type B slot is available for additional memory expansion.

The redesigned body also sports a refined, graphite grey matte finish, 5D joystick, and customizable buttons for improved use and handling.

Hasselblad has also released an updated version of their mobile app, Phocus Mobile 2, that’s fully compatible with the X2D II 100C’s new color science. Edit RAW, HEIF, and full-size JPEGs directly from an iPhone or iPad, or remotely control the camera. It connects to X and V system medium format cameras via Wi-Fi, also offering firmware updates and powered-off camera wake-up.

Joining the new camera is the XCD 35-100mm f/2.8-4 E Lens, a versatile standard zoom with flagship optical performance, high-speed autofocus, and an ultra-fast leaf shutter. Its optical structure features 16 elements in 13 groups, incorporating 3 aspherical elements and 5 ED elements. At every focal length and aperture setting, the lens delivers the resolution and sharpness that meets the demands of the 100MP sensor, with soft, creamy bokeh in low depth-of-field scenarios.

The lens also has an advanced stepping motor driving the internal focus group, yielding a snappy and precise autofocus experience. The lens is an ideal pairing for the X2D II 100C’s new continuous AF capability and subject tracking algorithms. The leaf shutter, which has a broad range from 1/4000s to 68 minutes, allows flash synchronization at every speed.

All things considered, the metal body is compact and lightweight at just under 2 lb and 5.2″. In addition to zoom and focus rings, a control ring allows users to assign an exposure function for easy workflow.

The XCD 35-100mm f/2.8-4 E takes 86mm filters, and Hasselblad is also releasing three filters designed for the lens: a circular polarizer, a three-stop neutral density filter, and a UV filter, all available separately.

Finally, Hasselblad is releasing a new 20L camera backpack, the Vandra. The bag is rated for a camera and two lenses, with compartments for a laptop or tablet and other accessories. The right-side opening allows direct access to the camera, and magnetic, self-locking clasps secure the opening while still allowing for smooth, single-handed release.
